SCOPE OF PRACTICE

The Scope of Practice Policy of Canadian Massage and Acupressure Therapists Association (CMATA) defines the professional activities that CMATA members are educated, competent, and authorized to perform, and establishes the boundaries of safe and ethical practice.


Scope of Practice


CMATA members provide non-invasive manual therapy services intended to promote health, relaxation, pain relief, improved circulation, stress reduction, and functional well-being.
Authorized techniques may include massage therapy, acupressure techniques, trigger point therapy, stretching and joint mobilization within training limits, soft tissue manipulations and other adjunctive therapies.

 

Professional Responsibilities


Members must:

  • Obtain informed consent before treatment

  • Maintain accurate client records

  • Practice within their education and competency

  • Follow CMATA's Code of Ethics and Practice Standards

  • Refer clients to appropriate healthcare professionals when necessary


Limitations


CMATA members shall not:

  • Diagnose medical conditions

  • Prescribe medications or supplements

  • Perform surgery or invasive procedures

  • Claim to cure diseases

  • Perform any activity restricted by federal, provincial, or municipal laws


Education and Competency


Members must meet CMATA's entry-to-practice requirements and comply with continuing education requirements to remain in good standing.
 

Public Protection


CMATA maintains Code of Ethics, Practice Standards, Complaint and Disciplinary Policy, and Privacy Policy to protect the public and ensure professional accountability.
